19/07/24: Catching Up With The Network
It's the best I've done so far and it's still kinda shitty
So, it's been a good half year or so since my latest server rebuild, and it's working pretty well for me! [user1] has appreciated it a lot too, which kinda makes all the bullshit I've but up with (the network, not her. She's great) worth it.
So far, the situation looks like this:
- Standard Issue ISP Router, which has gotten everything except the modem turned off for the crime of Requiring An App And Account
- - Brand New Router we got on sale
- - - QWERP, my old desktop converted into a TrueNAS Core server and running far too many services
- - - Secondhand Router A, an *extremely* shitty little gadget that's lucky to make it to 100Mbit/s an thus relegated to the most garbage of boxes
- - - - A smart light hub
- - - - Mini, the pi-hole that keeps this network largely ad-free and also provides the custom DNS entries for the internal network (fun fact, this page can be ween by going to the web. subdomain while on the network!)
- - - Secondhand Router B, actually capable of decent speeds and thus have the privledge of keeping out consoles plugged in!
It's a lot to manage, but I've found it pretty rewarding. Spinning up a new service on TrueNAS is great fun (this webserver is the newest!), getting the PS3 to play nice with the media server was an excellent challenge (the first method I tried was by running some wacky third-party program called PS3NetSrv, but I'm now using a miniDLNA plugin/jail and it's much more reliable), and trying to keep everything behaving nicely has been extremely rewarding.
Ultimately, I think this ieteration of the server is my favorite thus far, although I'm afraid that if I build too much more onto it the poor thing is just going to fall right over. [user4] already has enough trouble staying online, and I worry that the dozen or so services I've spun up aren't helping them. I wish I could figure out what's messing with Foundry's load times so much, it can't all just be the switch from XOA to TrueNAS...
Anyways, I've rambled on long enough, have a good night!
